Jo Jo’s Sweetest Stories
My love of candy began with love from my grandfather—and, if I’m honest, a little sibling rivalry!
Every summer, our Momma put my sister and I on a plane to Texas to visit our grandparents. On the very first day at my mom’s parents’ home, my Paw Paw would take us straight to the corner store. He let us each fill a small paper bag with candy, reminding us that it was supposed to last the entire week.
Of course, I couldn’t resist. I always ate my entire bag on day one. When my big sister—ever the rule follower—refused to share her carefully saved stash, I’d run to Paw Paw in tears, telling him she wouldn’t share.
And without fail, Paw Paw would take me back to the store, buy me another little bag, and gently repeat the same instructions: “Now remember, this has to last you all week.”
Naturally, the cycle repeated itself again and again. By the end of the trip, Paw Paw and I had shared a visit to that corner store every day. Today, I’m closer than ever to my big sister and we still giggle about our summer visits.
Why Candy Memories Matter
Looking back, those trips weren’t just about sugar—they were about love, tradition, and the little moments that stay with you forever. Candy has a way of tying us to our childhoods and the people who made them sweet.
For me, every gummy bear or lollipop still brings back memories of Paw Paw’s kindness, patience, and twinkle-in-his-eye indulgence.
